How to Inspect a MacBook Retina Screen

  1. Disable True Tone & Night Shift: Open System Settings → Displays and turn off True Tone and Night Shift so color temperature remains 6500K neutral.
  2. Clean the Display: Power off the MacBook and gently wipe the anti-reflective glass with a clean, dry microfiber cloth to remove dust particles and oil smudges.
  3. Launch Edge-to-Edge Test: Click the Start Test button above to expand the pure solid color engine across your full MacBook aspect ratio (16:10).
  4. Inspect High-Contrast Colors:
    • Solid White: Reveals dark dead pixels, keyboard friction spots, and edge yellowing.
    • Solid Black: Reveals bright hot pixels, stuck RGB subpixels, and corner backlight leakage.
    • Red, Green, Blue: Isolates each individual subpixel transistor channel.
  5. Log Observations: Use ESC to exit and create your official client-side display inspection certificate.

MacBook Display Technologies Explained

Different MacBook generations utilize distinct panel architectures:

MacBook Air (M1, M2, M3)

Features IPS LCD panels with LED edge backlighting and P3 wide color gamut. Look for edge backlight uniformity and subpixel clarity.

MacBook Pro 14" & 16" (Liquid Retina XDR)

Features mini-LED full-array local dimming with 120Hz ProMotion. High contrast in dark rooms shows subtle optical blooming around bright UI elements.

Anti-Reflective Coating (Staingate)

Inspect older Retina MacBooks for permanent keyboard friction lines or anti-reflective coating delamination around bezel edges.

MacBook Screen Testing FAQs

Clean your display glass gently with a dry microfiber cloth, disable True Tone and Night Shift in macOS System Settings temporarily, click 'Start MacBook Fullscreen Test', and cycle through solid White, Black, Red, Green, and Blue screens.

Liquid Retina XDR displays use thousands of local dimming mini-LED zones. In high-contrast dark rooms, a subtle halo or glow around bright white objects against pure black backgrounds is normal optical blooming, distinct from edge backlight bleed defects.

During Apple's 14-day standard return window, you can exchange or return your MacBook for any reason, including a single dead pixel. Beyond the return period, Apple Store Genius Bar technicians evaluate pixel defects under AppleCare+ or manufacturer warranty guidelines.
